A View From A Hill
Inspired by the short ghost story of the same name by MR James, Adam Clitheroe's new photobook A View from a Hill is a book about the English landscape. Or rather:
the unsettling unloveliness of that landscape, replete with not-quite-picturesque views.
Through a mix of black-and-white and colour photography, Clitheroe's infernal lens explores what the writer Robert Macfarlane calls the English eerie, "the skull beneath the skin of the countryside". The images elide past and present, history and memory, urban and rural, sinister and innocent, to uncanny effect. There is the sense that inexplicable acts have just happened, or are imminent. This is an uneasy landscape, scarred and littered with the mysterious totems of absent people; a convoluted mess of grubby banalities and casual terrors, stuck in its own time warp.
